PETER PAN AND THE SHADOW SELF

It was Mrs. Darling in the opening chapter of the J M Barrie book of Peter Pan that first heard of Peter when she was ‘tidying up her children’s minds’. The duty of every good mother is to tidy away all the nasties and the naughties at the end of the evening so that when her darlings awake in the fresh light of day, they know nothing of the tricksters and travellers that have crafted their way in to their thoughts to distract them from their obedient, earthly duties.

Each night, Mrs. Darling would roll up Peter’s shadow and tuck it away in the drawer but, each morning, Wendy would awaken and remember, for children with the golden light never forget!

From a psychological viewpoint, the story of Peter and Wendy is one that travels through the waves of time and space – The hippocampus in the brain is where the SLOW WAVE electrical impulses are recorded through sleep studies and where we know scientifically that these waves directly impact the neocortex’s ability to obtain long term memory storage as it files away all our daily memories in timeline order.

Mrs. Darling was doing just that. Filing away all the memories in to storage so that the evil temptations and recalls don’t scare them at night. This is why many say that sleep disturbances are often associated with mental illness

Barrie wrote about how much of the plot for Peter and Wendy transpired during dream state in the fantasy island of Neverland, a place that could only be reached through the childlike imagination which funnily enough, if practiced through the day didn’t seem like such a problem, with Barrie noting

When you play at it by day with the chairs and tablecloth, it is not in the least alarming, but in the two minutes before you go to sleep it becomes very nearly real.

These hypnogogic states occur at the edge of sleep when you tap in to that ultra vivid sweet spot where our imagination can either flip or flop in to astral or awake – The moment our subconscious shadow mind becomes active through high impulse visual processing when normally the brain shuts down for sleep but sometimes instead, you catch that wave…..And you ride to neverland!

HOW TO ACCESS YOUR INNER NEVERLAND AND YOUR INNER CHILD

It has become a popular thing in this day and age to meditate and much like we mentioned in Assignment 1, creating a safe space to free travel in your mind and tap in to your body is something that is very possible to do and a highly successful way to use your body / brain as the vehicle responder to jumping on to different frequency waves.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TAP IN

But to keep it simple and start small, here are a few tips inspired by the little boy who never lost his inner child

TALKING TO THE INNER CHILD – WARNING, THE REASON WHY THIS MIGHT SEEM AN UNCOMFORTABLE TASK TO DO IS BECAUSE IT BRINGS UP A LOT OF EMOTION. THE RESISTANCE TO DO SOMETHING IS OFTEN DUE TO THE FEELINGS THAT IT BRINGS WITH IT AND THIS MIGHT MAKE YOU WANT TO HAVE A CRY. PREPARE AND GET SOME HANKIES AND HAVE A CUPPA AND SOME BISCUITS IF YOU NEED, OR, JUST HAVE FUN! DID YOU EVER HAVE AN IMAGINARY FRIEND WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP? BRING HIM / HRE ALONG FOR THE RIDE TOO 😊
